For some that are starting up a new business a logo can be seen just as an inconvenient cost with little or no thought given to it. But should something that represents you and your business be left to chance?

What all this will cost depends on a few things and here are a few things to bare in mind when trying to find someone to design your logo:

Letting your mate do it

Some people resort to letting their mate or someone they know who has a hooky copy of Photoshop that they think they can use In exchange for a pack of beer or something. Sadly the results are often the same, a low res clipart image with your company name written next to it in Arial or some fancy font they have just downloaded for free.

For some people such as someone that has decided to take up cleaning a few hours a week and happy to rely solely on work from friends and family then a well designed or thought out logo may just not be needed. However for most people that are serious about making their business a success and wish to market themselves and attract new customers, then perhaps your logo should not be left in the hands of someone who works for beer.

Avoid cheap websites

Sites such as Fiver or 99 designs that offer logo design for £5 are probably very tempting to someone just starting up their own business. However most of the time you get what you pay for and a large number of people that are offering their services on these sites are people just like your mate with that dodgy copy of Photoshop trying to make a quick quid or 2. You may be lucky and get a half decent looking logo from these sites but you definitely wont get an identity to your business.

Enlisting the help of a Graphic Designer

By enlisting a Graphic designer to do your logo for you, you will probably have to pay a bit more then a few quid or a pack of beer (a 30 year single malt may just do it) but you will get a professional looking high res logo that not only shows what you do, but by using the right colours, fonts and styles it gives your logo an identity and can tell someone a lot more about your business such as your personality and will be attractive to your particular target market.

Agency or Freelancer?

An agency will tend to have more people to solve your problem therefore you will be calling on a wealth of knowledge and ideas with an agency. This can come at a higher cost though than using a freelance designer who’s overheads will be much lower. If enlisting a freelancer check their portfolio of work, they may have a certain style or may have only worked within certain sectors that may not be right for your business.

How many concepts?

Some people just don’t know what they want till they see it and may require to see a number of concept ideas to choose from. Others may have a clearer idea and want a designer to turn their sketches or ideas into something professional looking with one or two other suggestions. Have a think how many concepts you will ideally want to see or choose from. A good number is usually between 3 and 6 original concepts but the price will definitely depend on how many concepts you have. Remember in most cases you are paying for the designers time, the more you ask for, the longer it will take and the more it will cost.

Trust your designer

once you receive a concept you are more or less happy with but wish to make a few further tweaks, then most designers will happily alter or tweak a design for you a couple of times. If you're still not 100% sold on the design or wish to satisfy your curiosity further, then further edits or versions will most likely start to cost you more.

Remember you have enlisted a graphic designer for his skills and experience. There is often reasoning behind every design so make sure the designer conveys his ideas or reasoning to you before you start commenting or tweaking their design.

Remember a logo is not a brand....yet!

Your designer or agency will most likely offer other services that are essential to starting up a new business and building your brand. You may be able to get a good deal on your logo by packaging it with 2 or 3 other services. This not only saves you money but also the time and hassle of having to source different people to provide these for you. Also by getting it all done by one person, you are more likely to get a consistent look to your brand.
